Kick-off renewed cycle route “De Locht”

Kick-off renewed cycle route "De Locht" 20 August

On Sunday, August 20, we not only organize our annual harvest day. Together with Stichting Landschap Horst aan de Maas we present the renewed ‘Cycle Route De Locht’. This renewed route is 33 km long and allows you to experience the story of the Locht about the search for food, clothing and shelter beyond the boundaries of the museum. Kick-off is at 11.00 am at our museum. Be surprised and cycle – together with members of Historical Bicycle Association de Oude Fiets – back in time! Along the new route there are various activities this day. Let yourself be carried away by what we have highlighted for you and cherish the rich history of the North Limburg countryside.

Cycle route ‘De Locht’ route takes you via farm paths and country roads along various cultural-historical places where various extra activities are organized on Sunday 20 August:

  • Molen Eendracht maakt Macht in Meterik is open from 11.00 am. The working mill can be visited, in addition you will find a bakhuuske and demo fields with cereals, vegetables and a low-stem orchard with berry garden on the site. In the barn there are information boards about the rich history of the mill and its surroundings; the Meterikse Veld and De Schaak.
  • National monument the Sint-Lambertuskerk in Horst can be visited from 12:00. Showpieces of the church are the twenty wooden statues of saints that date from the period around 1500. In the crypt of the church you will find the treasure chambers with often centuries-old liturgical utensils, paraments and banners.
  • On the Groote Molenbeek in Slooyerbroek there is an information stand of the municipality of Horst aan de Maas and Greenport Venlo about the redevelopment of the area between Kasteelpark Ter Horst and Exit 11 of the A73. A lot of new nature will be created here in the coming period. At the flower meadow there is an information stand of Akkie’s garden about bees and biodiversity with bee products.
  • Landgoed De Gortmeule is free to visit this day. The oldest parts of the farm date from 1600 and you will still find many authentic elements and outbuildings. On the estate there are standard orchards and valuable landscape elements such as hedges, pools and the Gortmeules fen. The flax field is also unique. The Gortmeule is a cultural-historical gem with a lot of attention for sustainability and biodiversity.
  • Around ‘t Ham on the Groote Molenbeek more and more new nature is being created, whereby ‘t Ham is brought back as much as possible to the situation as it used to be: many small grassland plots with pools, bordered with hedgerows, canals and bushes. On August 20, machines on a 3 ha agricultural plot are busy digging pools and preparing for planting. Landscape Horst aan de Maas is present to explain and there is an information stand about the history of ‘t Ham, d’n Dyck and surroundings.
  • At Open Air Museum de Locht the harvest day is organized. Step back in time and experience the activity and conviviality around the harvest in former times. There are also – in collaboration with National Bicycle Museum Velorama – a number of classic bicycles to view. There is plenty to do for young and old, a real family outing!

The renewed route ‘De Locht’ has a length of 33km and is ideal to combine with a visit to the museum for a further deepening of what you will encounter during the route. Cycle route ‘De Locht’ can be downloaded on https://www.landschaphorstaandemaas.nl/de-locht. Here you will find stories, photos and videos to enrich the route.

The project has been made possible in part by the Leisure Economy subsidy of the municipality of Horst aan de Maas.
