On the Sunday before Easter, PalmPasen (the beginning of the holy week), children are allowed to make “palm cavities”. This is a stick or wooden cross decorated with boxwood, fruit, sweets and a rooster in the top. They can form the roosters of bread dough themselves and have them baked in the Bakhuuske.
In the Locht we keep old traditions alive. The celebration of Palm Passes recalls the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. He was welcomed with palm branches, just as we wave flags to the king on Prince’s Day. We use boxwood instead of palm branches. The cockerel of bread refers to the breaking of the bread at the Last Supper and to the rooster that crowed after Peter had said that he did not know Jesus.
Make something beautiful out of it!
