“Sint Maarten, Sint Maarten, the cows have tails…”
That’s what children sing with Sint Maarten, when they go from door to door with a lantern in their hand. As a thank you, they receive sweets, other refreshments, a mandarin or an apple. Often the tour ends at the Sint Maartensvuur.
In the past, children did not have lanterns. Instead, here in the region, hollowed-out fodder or sugar beets were used with a candle in it. In our museum we keep traditions alive. That is why we are going to make such a beet flare with children on Sunday 6 November.
With the help of our experienced volunteers, they can hollow out a beet. Then we turn holes in it with an apple drill, otherwise you can’t see the light of course. It’s the eyes! Then you can decorate the beetroot with beer caps, ribbons, beads and rope. Make something beautiful out of it.
Are you coming to make a beet flare with us? With Sint Maarten you can use it at the door. And then… sing!
