It is likely that the first people worldwide and independently of each other made something out of bendable twigs in which you could take things with you or store them: baskets. Baskets were there in prehistoric times, baskets are still there today. Basket weaver or basket maker is an old craft that is still practiced and demonstrated in the Western world mainly as a hobby.
In the past, baskets were a necessary utensil in the home, agriculture, fishing and industry. Nowadays, they are often decorative. Only in the developing countries does it retain its original function. The former Institute for the Blind in Grave had, among other things, a training course for basket making. In the village the basket maker had no existence, often this was an extra income for, for example, a day laborer. After the Second World War, the basket maker disappeared, the baskets remained.
